A contemporary art installation by art:i:curate artist Stefano Canto is on display in a rather unusual location, the Oratory of Saint Mercurius in Palermo, Sicily.

The Oratory of Saint Mercurius is a sixteenth century Oratory that houses some of the first stuccoes of the famous Palermitan artist Giacomo Serpotta. It is here that the artist Stefano Canto is exhibiting a previously unseen work from the Serpotta-inspired series 'Rotations' (2010-2015), for Sacrosanctum #3.


Sacrosanctum #3 is a series of exhibitions organised by the Association Amici dei Musei Siciliani curated by Adalberto Abbate and Maria Luisa Montaperto. Now in its third month, Sacrosanctum sees a new art installation placed in the Oratory. This little ritual, that takes place the last friday of every month, aims to make the viewer more aware of the delicate theme of the valurisation of the cultural heritage of the city of Palermo through the genesis and developement of the creative commitment of the artists.


In 'Rotations', his latest art installation, Canto distorts famous historical masterpieces by duplicating them in reduced forms and attaching them to rudimentary, electrical or manual machines, which spin the works around in circles and in doing so transform the image into an abstract vortex of colours in which the distinctive elements of the original work are completely unrecognisable.


Dislocation, uncertainty, exertion, incomprehension, limited fruition and interference of vision are the principal elements in play in this body of work, which is also linked to two other art installations 'Our Lady of Sorrow', commissioned by the Museum of Goa for the Biennale of Kochi Muziris in 2015, and All That Fall, first presented at Museo Riso in 2014, in which sacred images are used as a pretext to awaken a rethinking of the relationship between religion and power.
