Curated by Paul Smith & Friends participant Pierre Nowicki talks Marcel Duchamp, axis and circles.
Profession: PHD in Mathematics
Secret profession or as a kid I wanted to be: A Pilot (I know it's very original)
AIC: How would you describe your own personal aesthetic?
PN: French, i.e black is the only colour.
AIC: How would your friends describe your personality?
PN: To be honest I have absolutely no idea. I should ask them.
AIC: What inspires you?
PN: It is difficult to describe where inspiration comes from. Everything can be source of inspiration like technology, peers, etc.
AIC: Who's your hero?
PN: Marcel Duchamp for declaring art dead and at the same time producing wonderful pieces of art.
AIC: Do you consider yourself a collector? If so, what do you collect?
PN: Not really a collector per se. But never too late to start and to learn. Although, instead of liking some pieces of art I would be more interested in being able to realise them myself.
AIC: What's your most precious possession?
PN: A colour theory book from Johannes Itten.
AIC: What does the term 'curating' mean to you?
PN: A selection process where factors and criteria are used to collect and filter admissible art. But that doesn't mean it is only a cold mechanical process, of course.
AIC: Why did you get involved in this project?
PN: I am interested in the fact that art selection moves from top-down to bottom-up thanks to instantaneous online media.
AIC: How do you usually take art in?
PN: Gauging the integration of execution, media support and information into one piece with balanced equilibrium.
AIC: Describe Paul Smith in three words.
PN: Well to me it is the way colour was introduced in black suits. Eccentric. British.
AIC: Tell me something about yourself - anything.
PN: Believe in Ancient Greece concept: Time flows on a circle and not on an axis.
