Paricipating artists: Dalila Belaza, Xiaowei Chen, Paul Murnaghan

49B Studios is proud to invite you to ReBecoming, a multi-media dance performance organized by Hanlu Zhang, curator-in-residence at 49B Studios.

For all three days, doors open at 8pm. The performance starts promptly at 8:30pm. There will be an Artists Talk after the performance on Saturday. Please RSVP for any/all of the three days at [email protected]

Back in 2011, artist Xiaowei Chen (China/US) and choreographer/dancer Dalila Belaza (Alge ia/France) met while both were artists in residence at 49B Studios. Immediately, the two sensed a strong echo in each other’s practice in terms of background, approach and interests, albeit with very different media. The same year, while completing their residency programs at ISCP, Paul Murnaghan (Ireland) recorded the sound of Xiaowei’s daily, obsessive, meditative ballpoint pen drawing. This was a catalyst towards a dialogue, which exchanged drawings for sound, as Paul composed the soundtrac for ReBecoming.

All three artists entered this dialogue in 2013. Xiaowei transformed her drawings into a stop mot on animation, which construct a visual context for Dalila’s impromptu dance movements. The result of this elaborately conceived collaboration between three diverse artists will be presented live at 49B Studios where everything started.

ReBecoming at 49B Studios is the first version of a series of presentations. The work is not only a creative collision of three artists, but also an experimental collaboration between three distinct media: dance, drawing, and music. The dancing body, moving images, and organic sound create kinetic and synaesthetic moments that consider a landscape wounded, collapsing and evolving towards a new beginning. Between improvisation and control, symbiosis and independence, the macroscopic and the trivial, the performance accentuates tension and invites a glimpse of something unknowable.

Upcoming: Xiaowei Chen’s solo exhibition, which will include footage from the performance of ReBecoming, opens on Friday, September 12 at 49B Studios.

About Xiaowei Chen

Xiaowei Chen is currently living and working in Boston. Perennially curious for trivial and negligible things, Chen found herself in a constant state of searching for meanings of painting. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions internationally, including "Above and Below the Clouds" at The Research House for Asian Art (Chicago, 2013), "Beyond the Clouds" at Maya Polsky Gallery (Chicago, 2013), "In-formal abstraction" at (Art) Amalgamated (New York, 2013), "Story of the Creative, See | Exhibition Space (New York, 2013), "Facets of Figuration" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, 2011), etc. In 2009, Xiawhei Chen was honored by TLGUTS Gallery, Lynn, MA.
