An exclusive on-line conversation between Greek photographer Nikolas Ventourakis and Shoair Mavlian, Director of Photoworks, discussing the artist’s latest body of work, ‘BRDG’, being shown for the first time.
Join us for this online event – a conversation between Nikolas Ventourakis and Shoair Mavlian – discussing the artist’s latest body of work, ‘BRDG’, shown here for the first time, and his wider practice.
‘BRDG’ constists of photographs of the iconic 6th Street Viaduct in Los Angeles. The artist captured these images just before its destruction. The viaduct bridge connects the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles with the Boyle Heights neighbourhood. Its destruction is severely impacting the local community. The 6th Street Viaduct is immortalised in countless films, photographs and books, including ‘Grease’. Ventourakis continues this exploration of the memory of the place through these photographs, so familiar yet no longer in existence.
The artist took the photographs in this series while in Los Angeles for his Fulbright Scholarship in 2014. This series is one of 5 photographic projects relating to his time in the city, including ‘La Petite Morte Americaine’ and ‘Motel’.
There is an opportunity to ask questions during the talk.
