These assemblages are made with highly functional industrial elements and red buckram, although when put together the assemblage has no obvious function. The red buckram is a material used for the Singapore passport cover, the shredded buckram alludes red tape to a national identity crisis. It is a symbol for questioning existing psychology that shapes Singapore’s national identity and is also a reminder that from the individual to the nation, our identities are constantly being remade and negotiated over time. This perpetual state of flux mirrors the workings of bureaucracies and the authoritarian or utilitarian nature of them which have to be constantly re-evaluated. Read less
