In Locke's series of cast fruit she has cut through the seriousness of the bronze medium, painting some areas of the cast and leaving other areas as bare metal, revealing the materiality. In Banana and Coins (ii) the fruit skin is painted thickly and brightly, but the metal of the coins is left as harsh naked bronze. The coins become symbols both of value/devalue and of fertility/infertility, spilling forth from the otherwise barren fruit. Read less
