Oil on polyester.

Pounartzis’ latest body of work continues the artist’s experimentation with space and form. Each work represents a different meter of spatial order, depth and palette. Deliberate and restrained, Pounartzis orchestrates the space within the canvas to create areas of ground, shadow and suspension, influenced by the weight and severity of Berlin’s architecture, the city in which he began producing this series.

Although he describes the profound effect of the bleak, minimal uniformity of the metropolis, the resulting works resonate with sound, giving voice to an atmosphere, a geometric frequency. We search for references within these shifting planes – the profile of sliced posters, the hum of coloured lights, panes hovering on a building façade, the spine of a book. These minimal projects are open-ended, but they offer momentary respite from the narratives and noise of our everyday.

Pounartzis creates a sensory space for contemplation in which our eye can dance over one colour field and recede into the shadowy fold of the next. While these works are conscious of their history, they are playful and intuitive, encouraging us to read our own response to them, in relation to them. We spend inordinate amounts of time looking without seeing or hearing without listening, Pounartzis invites us to come up for air and locate the inner mysticism that exists between each breath.

Painted freehand onto the two-dimensional plane.
