Drawing on a range of sources from Eastern Philosophy, poetry and improvisational Jazz music, Yan's new series of collages are playful renditions of modernist sculptures, reminiscent of Alexander Calder yet using the archetypal forms from zen painting. Yan explores the vernacular of disparate worlds, yet working within a certain cultural tradition rooted in his Eastern cultural heritage. He combines references, such as Chinese calligraphy painting but re-articulates this language, extracting these gestures yet keeping to minimalist and austere tendencies. Yan's own sensibility for shape, colour and use of material and narrative seem timeless, engaging and experimental.
