The image of the flower is a recurrent theme in Miyazaki’s body of work corresponding to the utopian fantasy that coexists within any system of control. In this case, the flower represents a required utopian goal of a happy and psychologically stable society. Deriving inspiration from the recent traumatic events in Japan, the flower also aspires to offer some catharsis to the viewers as a symbol of regeneration. Read less
