Margrethe Aanestad is based in Stavanger and in Brooklyn, New York.

Aanestad has a language of minimal abstraction where geometric shapes are repeatedly explored in various techniques both two- and three-dimensionally. Thematically her work evolves around space and spatiality.

Inspired by light, atmosphere, nuances and textures, she examines the tension between physical and imaginative spaces, the actual and the implied, tactility and immateriality. She is often responding site-specific to rooms and spaces through assembled installations where physical objects enhance and respond back to the works on paper. Her drawings transcend the two-dimensional format and becomes finely-tuned sculptural, architectural objects.

Rather than repeat to achieve perfection, she transmits her personal presence and explores the nature and variation in the materials. In this way she forms, collect and compose, resulting in an exchange between intent, intuition and chance. Rooms, layers and structures subjected to these nuances allow in this way for the possibilities in the materials to open up, where they can be static and volatile at the same time.

Aanestad's references go back in time to traditions within art history, insisting on exploring timeless forms through repetition and reinvention that also resonate with a history of artistic obsessions and constant redefining of universal themes. Read less
