Restate artist chat
As part of art:i:curates current London exhibition, Restate, participating artist Alicja Dobrucka will be giving a talk about her artistic practice, as well as her current project featured in the Restate exhibition: Life is on a new high (2013).
Alicja Dobrucka's interests lie within the themes of cultural identity, and in particularly cultural transition. Her artistic investigation is mainly focusing on the junctures where cultures meet, merge and create new quality.
Her current artistic project ‘Life is on a New High’ (2013) aims to address the issue of the changing landscape and unregulated construction in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. It’s a project about the clash of the East and the West, and how newly rich Indians buy into the Western lifestyle, ruthlessly destroying the national heritage making the city impossible to negotiate by foot.
Alicja Dobrucka (b.1985) is a Polish artist based in London. Recent shows include “I like you, I like you a lot”, Wallflower Gallery, Mildura Arts Center (Muldura, 2013); “Creative Cities Collection”, Barbican (London, 2012); “Concrete in Common”, Kunst Raum Riechen (Basel, 2012); “New Contemporaries 2011”, ICA (London, 2011); the 54th Venice Biennale with WW Gallery (Venice, 2011); “Fresh Faced Wild Eyed 10”, The Photographers’ Gallery (London (2010). Alicja Dobrucka was the recipient of the Deutsche Bank Fine Art Award and Grant in Photography 2010. In 2011, she was awarded the Sotiri Prize, Korce, Albania.
Ask yourself, how much envy can you endure? Neither wealth nor influence will bring them back again.
You don’t just invite friends over. You invite awe.
