Untitled #3, Nico series, 2016/2020
56 x 46 cm
Edition of 5 + 1 AP, number 1 of 5
Alicja Dobrucka delves into light conscious photography as part of her ‘Nico’ series. Whilst staying in the neighbourhoods of Sumida-Ku and Koto-Ku, regulars at the bar Nico would become the subjects of many portraits during her time there in 2016. Similarly to the rest of the photographic series ‘Nico‘, light becomes integral to the visual focus. This work depicts a figure’s back, only distinguishable by the light delicately hitting the back of a clenched hand, long dark hair subtly catching the dim light. There is immense sensuality in the subtlety of this image and Dobrucka confidently portrays this to the viewer.
Dobrucka expresses her interest in Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s essay ‘In Praise of Shadows‘ when creating the series, she explains “he believes that there is no beauty without darkness and shadow”. She uses this imagery to great effect in her contrasted images that both entrance and intrigue the viewer.
