In ‘Untitled #12’, Alicja Dobrucka captures the essence of the Japanese portrait photograph. The work is part of her ‘Nico series‘, which was made while she was artist-in-resident at Tokyo Wonderland in 2016. The series presents portraits of people she met at her favourite bar, Nico, alongside portraits of facades of buildings at night. United by the use of shadow and light, the portrait images of people inside echo those of the buildings outside. Alicja presents a magical, eery and calm world. A city that races in day, seen in a different light. It is therefore a world full of possibilities.
