Alicja Dobrucka’s Tokyo city photography series, ‘Nico‘, portrays a banal world illuminated by night-time. This voyeuristic work by Dobrucka portrays a shop in the eery neighbourhoods of Sumida-Ku and Koto-Ku. During her Tokyo Wondersite residency in 2016, Dobrucka delved into the nightlife and walked the streets photographing the facades of buildings. Theatrical in quality, these photographs portray a backdrop transformed. ‘Untitled #7‘, 2016 depicts a shop front, textural with the presence of shadows. A row of plants adorn the supposedly mundane scene. These ordinary objects indicative of every day life feature heavily in her urban photography.
Dobrucka’s work is influenced by the writings of Jun’ichirō Tanaki. In particular, his essay on aesthetics ‘In Praise of Shadows’. He states “There is no beauty without darkness and shadow”. This ideal is prevalent in her Nico series.
